HAMMOND, Louisiana – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team to two road victories, senior forward Lady Lion Caitlyn Williams was named Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second straight time in a league office announcement on Monday.
Williams repeated as the league’s best player for the week after helping SLU earn a pair of three-game winning streaks for their opponents. The Brusly, La., native finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in Thursday’s 69-68 win at McNeese and Saturday’s 52-30 victory at HBU.
“Individual honors are a product of team success and we are very happy to see Caitlyn get the recognition she deserves,” the Southeastern head coach said. Ayla Guzzardo noted. “She’s been our most consistent offensive threat and protects our opponent’s best player defensively. She willingly took on a big role for us and embraced her position as a senior leader.”
Williams leads Southeastern (11-6, 7-0 Southland), which is enjoying its longest winning streak since the 1994-95 season, with 9.2 points per game. She leads Southland with a 56.0 field goal percentage and is third in the league with 8.1 rebounds per game. Williams enters the action this week as one of the program’s career leaders in rebounds (780, 6and) and blocked shots (89, 3rd).
The Lady Lions will return home to welcome McNeese Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to the University Center. The match will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard live online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive
