Williams named Southland Conference Player of the Week

HAMMOND, Louisiana – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team to two conference wins, senior forward Lady Lion Caitlyn Williams was named the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week in a league office announcement on Monday.

Williams is the first SLU player to earn Southland Player of the Week honors this season and the first since his teammate Hailey Giaratano claimed the honor on Feb. 15, 2021. Williams had previously been named Louisiana Player of the Week last March.

The Brusly, Louisiana native was one of many key contributors for the league-leading Lady Lions, which got off to a better 5-0 start in Southland. In both games this week, Williams led SLU in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in Southeast League wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UIW.

“This is a very well deserved honor for Caitlyn,” said the Lady Lion head coach. Ayla Guzzardo noted. “She worked hard and did what we asked of her on both ends of the court. Caitlyn is our best rebounder and has been a consistent scorer for us.”

Williams tied a career-high 17 rebounds to go with a team-high nine points as Southeastern earned a 48-43 win over TAMU-CC in a Southland co-leadership battle on Thursday. She backed that up with a 16-point, seven-rebound performance in Saturday’s 76-49 win over UIW.

In his final season at Hammond, Williams tied the team lead with Giaratano with 8.5 points per game and is currently fourth in Southland with 8.1 rebounds per game. She ranks among the program’s career leaders in rebounds (764, 7and) and blocked shots (87, 3rd).

Williams and the Lady Lions will be back in action on Thursday, traveling to Lake Charles for a 5 p.m. Southland contest at McNeese. The game can be streamed online at www.LionSports.net/ListenLive. A live video stream (McNeese subscription required) will also be available at www.McNeeseSports.com.
