Whether it’s the Fendi Baguette or the Louis Vuitton Neverfull, the pantheon of designer bags is lined with icons, some named after the glamorous women who have worn them and others instantly recognizable by their silhouette alone. Plated on the arms of It-girls, splattered on the pages of glossy magazines and coveted by teenage girls – no, I’m not talking about a Hollywood crush, more of a (not-so-humble) designer bag.
But what’s remarkable about the new pieces added to the range is that they come from the archives – think Prada’s nylon collection reissue or Gucci’s Diana bag. And, unsurprisingly, it’s sparking increased interest in vintage originals.
“Vestiaire Collective has seen continued growth for classic styles across brands,” says the resale site. “For example, the Fendi Baguette saw sales increase 33% over the past year, peaking in March 2022 shortly after its Fall/Winter 2022 collection was presented at Milan Fashion Week.”
With new (and perfectly curated) resale platforms opening up every day and designer brands limiting releases of new designs, the demand for beloved designer bags has never been greater – or more accessible. Sellier Knightsbridge, the number one retailer of Hermès in the UK, saw the bags sell out within days due to the scarcity of new styles. The most expensive ever sold was a Hermès Kelly which fetched £15,000, three times its RRP. Clearly, the designer bag resale market is booming at both ends of the spectrum.

The Hermès Kelly and Birkin
“It’s a piece that has exploded in popularity this year. First popularized by Grace Kelly, the Hermès Kelly bag appeals to investors and first-time buyers alike. We have seen sales of this model jump by 50%” – Saddler Knightsbridge.
“Hermès accessories are a real investment and will always stand the test of time. Their limited availability only adds to their desirability and it is always worth seeking out that special piece. The pink clutch is a playful piece while the black picotin is timeless. The Birkin is always in demand – the finest in craftsmanship, elegant, recognizable and always chic. They are real collectibles.” – Clare Richardson, Founder, Reluxe.
The Fendi Baguette

The Louis Vuitton Murakami print
“Y2K Fashion remains a favorite with vintage enthusiasts. The Louis Vuitton Murakami collaboration defined the era and remains the ultimate collaboration for the house. Among the most popular designs are the multicolored printed nano-speedy white bags, as seen on Kylie Jenner, and the cherry design multi-pocket bag. Sales increased by 30%.” – Sellier Knightsbridge.
